Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Phnom Penh-Sihanouk Expressway on 22 March 2019, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the government is studying and examining the feasibility to construct a new airport in the northeast of the country.

“Phnom Penh needs a new airport, Siem Reap needs a new airport, and we are looking to put an airport in the northeast,” Samdech said, “I think in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, it [airport] can be in that area, the airport can be in that area”, he added.

According to Samdech, the need to construct a new airport in the area is because it will become a major economic hub in the northeast of the country. The region will develop with agro-industry, agritourism and other economic sectors that will boost national economic growth.
