Gov’t Declares Svay Rieng as 8th Mine-Free Province

The Cambodian government has declared Svay Rieng as the eighth mine-free province,  according to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC)’s announcement on 20 February. 

Under the support of the Samdech Techo Project for Mine Action in Svay Rieng province, CMAC cleared all mines in the project with a total area of 12 square kilometres, equivalent to 139 minefields. 

CMAC found and destroyed 1,023 anti-personnel mines and 299 other explosive remnants. 

In total, operators have cleared both minefields and explosive remnants of war in a total area of 41 square kilometres, equivalent to 419 minefields. The team found and destroyed 3,569 anti-personnel mines, 132 anti-tank mines, and 7,1843 other explosive remnants. 

The government has, to date, declared eight mine-free provinces including Svay Rieng,  Prey Veng, Kandal, Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Preah Sihanouk, Sihanoukville, Ratanakkiri and Takeo provinces.
