Cambodian Gov’t Breaks Ground on 3-Hectare Nursery in Tbong Khmum, Aiming to Plant 1 Million Trees Annually

The Ministry of Environment has launched the construction of a 3-hectare regional nursery in Tbong Khmum province, with the goal of producing over 1 million trees annually.

Situated in Village 44, Preah Theat Commune, Orang Ov District, the nursery will be powered by a solar irrigation system, supported by partnerships with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Coca-Cola Cambodia.

This project contributes to Cambodia’s long-term objective of achieving 60% forest cover by 2050, as confirmed by the Ministry of Environment on 8 September 2024.

HE Dr Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, emphasized that the new nursery is a critical step toward reforestation and combating climate change. He extended his gratitude to development partners, private sector contributors, local authorities, and the public for their support. Additionally, plans are in place to construct similar nurseries in Mondulkiri, Siem Reap, Kampong Speu, and Koh Kong provinces.

Ms Alissar Chaker, UNDP Representative in Cambodia, expressed the organisation’s support for Cambodia’s reforestation strategy, underscoring its alignment with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (NDC) and the nation’s carbon-neutral ambitions.

Ms Sambath Monivorleak, Director of Public Relations for Coca-Cola Cambodia, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the project, particularly in implementing the solar irrigation system. She highlighted Coca-Cola’s dedication to renewable energy and pollution reduction as part of their sustainability goals.
