Gov’t to Equip Solar-Mini Grid System for 350 Villages

The Ministry of Mines and Energy in collaboration with the Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EAC) and Electricity of Cambodia (EDC) is looking for ways to equip solar-mini grid systems and solar home systems in villages without access to electricity.

Currently, 13,818 villages representing 97.53% of total villages nationwide have been electrified and the other 350 villages (2.47%) are un-electrified, according to a report co- produced by three government bodies issued this week.

The remaining 350 un-electrified villages are mostly located on islands, flooded areas during the rainy season, areas without road access, floating areas and remote areas with a scattered population.

“The Ministry of Mines and Energy, EDC have been seeking the possibility of supplying electricity to the remaining villages through Solar Mini-Grid Systems and through the projects of distributing Solar Home Systems,” the ministry said.

In 2021, the ministry received funds from UNDP Cambodia for Solar Mini-Grid Systems to supply electricity to three villages in Kampong Cham province.

The EDC also plans to distribute 10,000 Solar Home Systems for use in the remaining villages.
