Gov’t to Enforce Nationwide Measures on Public Road Encroachment with New Sub-decree

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is speeding up discussion and revision of the draft sub-decree on land management along public roads and railways to put the sub-decree into effect as soon as possible.

Secretary of State for Public Works and Transport (MPWT) HE Lim Sidenin said at the meeting on 23 February that the main purpose of this sub-decree is to eliminate land encroachment along the public roads and railways.

“So far, we have seen many people building their private properties on some parts of public roads. This causes a lot of troubles, especially when the government want to renovate those roads or develop any infrastructures nearby,” said HE Lim.

“This sub-decree will also make it easier for the relevant authorities to deal with the impact resettlement works when the government develop any projects, as the sub-decree will state the boundary between public and private land clearly. Therefore, no one can claim more than what they should have” he added.

With this new sub-decree, the MPWT will also have the full authority to manage and prepare development a masterplan for land along public roads and railways without having to force people to demolish their property each time there is a development project.
