Ground Broken on US$22-million Wastewater Treatment Plant in Battambang

Construction of a US$21.7-million wastewater treatment in Battambang, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has begun.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 07 December under the presence of Battambang City Chief Pheng Sethy.

Located in Norea commune, Sangke district, south of Battambang city, this project is the second phase of the ADB funded initiative.

The construction of the project is being implemented by MTA Construction Co Ltd, and scheduled to be complete by September 2023.

Mr Pheng Sethy said that once completed; the facility will not only help treat wastewater before releasing it to the river but also will help reduce flood risk during the rainy season.

Battambang Provincial Governor HE Nguon Rattanak said in June that Battambang planned on constructing a sewerage system and wastewater treatment station with a treatment capacity of 12,000 cubic metre/day. The project is scheduled to start construction by the end of 2020 and is expected to be completed by 2022.

“This plan will make Battambang become the country’s third city to have a sewerage system and a wastewater treatment station after Sihanoukville and Siem Reap,” said HE Ngoun Ratanak.
