Hong Kong International Airport Surpasses Changi to Become Asia’s Leading Hub in 2024

Hong Kong International Airport has overtaken Singapore’s Changi Airport to claim the prestigious title of “Asia’s Leading Airport” at the 2024 World Tourism Awards, according to Seasia, 9 September 2024.

This marks a significant milestone, as Changi Airport had held this top position for several consecutive years before the pandemic.

The win highlights Hong Kong’s rapid recovery and growing prominence in the aviation industry, with its airport now serving 220 destinations through 120 airlines. The facility handled 39.5 million passengers last year, achieving 55 percent of its 2019 figures.

This is only the second year that Hong Kong International Airport has competed for the title, a testament to its growing influence. Open since 1998 and covering 1,900 hectares, it remains the only airport in Hong Kong, playing a crucial role in connecting global travelers to Asia.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore’s Changi Airport was a dominant force, widely recognised for its unique features, including the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

However, Hong Kong’s remarkable growth and focus on international connectivity has propelled it to the top spot, leaving Changi behind in the 2024 rankings.

The competition between the two airports signals a dynamic shift in Asia’s aviation landscape, with Hong Kong International Airport continuing to expand and set new standards for efficiency and service in the region.
