How Bentley Software Engineered China’s Newest Mega-Factory

Chinse firm MMI Planning & Engineering Institute has saved millions of yuan and cut down on construction delays by switching to digital workflow in their mega Manufacturing Industrial Park project.

Located in Changchun city, this $182.5 million Industrial Park is cornerstone for the region’s economic growth and the expansion of the iconic Hongqi automotive brand.

The complexity of the project required a perfect harmony between massive industrial machinery and the building’s infrastructure. To achieve this, the team relied heavily on OpenBuildings Designer to create a three-dimensional process design.

This software allowed engineers to visualize the exact spatial occupancy and operating trajectories of the stamping equipment, ensuring that every robot and conveyor belt had the necessary safety clearance.

The institute even developed custom equipment parameters within OpenBuildings Designer, which boosted design efficiency by 25% and reduced the time spent on equipment modeling by a staggering 90%.

Another useful too is ProjectWise. As a collaborative 3D design platform, ProjectWise allowed different engineering disciplines to work together online in real-time. This synchronized approach eliminated the “silos” that often lead to errors, reducing offline communication by 80%.

By catching mistakes in the virtual world rather than on the construction site, the team identified and resolved 2,460 design clashes, saving approximately 5 million yuan in potential rework costs.

The visual and foundational elements of the factory were supported by MicroStation and Bentley LumenRT. MicroStation provided the robust drafting environment needed for precise technical drawings, while Bentley LumenRT allowed the team to create high-fidelity visualizations of the facility. These tools ensured that the project moved from a digital concept to a physical reality 20 days faster than originally scheduled.

The success of the Prosperity Factory marks the first time that integrated 3D process equipment modeling has been applied to an automotive stamping workshop in this way.
