China Contributes to Construction of 37 roads of 3,077km Over 37 Roads & 10 Major Bridges, Worth US$2.1bn in Cambodia

Infrastructure projects fuelled by China’s concessional loans and grants have ushered in a new era of progress in Cambodia, with completed and ongoing ventures boasting a total investment of US$3,340 million. The revelation came during the celebration of the first anniversary of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway on 7 November as articulated by HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia.

A staggering 31 roads, spanning a collective length of 3,077 kilometres, have been successfully accomplished, underlining the extensive impact of China’s financial support. Six additional road construction projects, encompassing 557.62 kilometres, are currently underway, with a budget of approximately US$675.87 million.

The infrastructural surge extends beyond roads, with the construction of ten major bridges covering a total expanse of 10,897 metres and costing around US$372.15 million. Further contributing to this developmental narrative is the ongoing construction of a 1,761-metre bridge over the Mekong River in Kratie province, supported by a budget of US$111.98 million.

Deputy PM Sun Chanthol highlighted the magnitude of these projects, emphasising their collective impact on Cambodia’s socio-economic landscape. He also provided insights into the progress of the “Funan Techo Canal” project, which signed the Framework Agreement (FA) on 17 October 2023, in China, urging an expeditious and meticulous feasibility study.

In a forward-looking initiative, HE Sun Chanthol called upon companies to expedite the feasibility study for the third expressway linking Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Poipet. The emphasis is on accelerating the study to seamlessly transition to subsequent procedures, ensuring the timely fruition of this vital project within the tenure of the current seventh-mandate government.
