Phnom Penh’s Southwest Irrigation Project Achieves 32% Completion, Promising Agricultural Revival

The Irrigation and Water Rehabilitation Project in southwest Phnom Penh has reached a notable milestone, with 32% of the construction work completed as of 26 December 2024.

This progress was confirmed during a site inspection led by HE Pich Veasna, Undersecretary of State and Project Director, representing HE Thor Chetha, the Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology.

During the inspection, HE Pich Veasna emphasized the urgency of accelerating construction efforts, particularly during the dry season, to meet project deadlines as stipulated in the contract. He acknowledged the cooperation of local authorities, districts, communes, and farmers who temporarily suspended dryland rice cultivation to facilitate the renovation and reconstruction work.

This ambitious project is financed through concessional loans from the Royal Government of Japan and aims to rehabilitate and construct two significant irrigation systems. Upon completion, the Rolaing Chrey irrigation system will play a transformative role in agriculture, enabling twice-yearly rice cultivation across approximately 16,910 hectares and supporting dryland rice cultivation over 1,500 hectares. These enhancements are expected to bolster regional food security and productivity significantly. (Read More)

By strengthening the water management infrastructure, the initiative will improve the livelihoods of countless farmers in the region, reflecting a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. It also underlines Cambodia’s focus on enhancing rural development and ensuring resilience in agricultural systems.
