Japan Extends Over $300,000 in Grants to Enhance Irrigation and Education Infrastructure in Cambodia

New Japanese assistance focuses on agricultural resilience in Banteay Meanchey and female student welfare in Mondulkiri through the KUSANONE framework

The Government of Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to Cambodia’s grassroots development by providing a total of $301,904 in grant assistance for two critical projects. Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi and representatives from the recipient organizations signed the grant contracts on February 6, 2026, under the framework of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, commonly known as KUSANONE.

A significant portion of the funding, totaling $220,216, is allocated to the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology for the rehabilitation of the Ou Srolao Chhrom irrigation facilities. This project is designed to secure a stable and reliable water supply for local farmers throughout the year, directly benefiting over 6,000 residents in an area often challenged by water scarcity. By improving water management, the initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity and support the livelihoods of families, including those who have recently returned to the province.

The second grant of $81,688 is dedicated to the Mondulkiri Provincial Training Center for the construction of a female student dormitory and the procurement of modern vocational training equipment. This facility addresses a critical need for safe and comfortable accommodation for young women from remote indigenous communities who travel long distances to pursue their education. In addition to providing housing, the new equipment will enable students to gain essential technical skills, significantly improving their employment opportunities and future standard of living.

Recently, Japan has also provided grant assistance to build shelters for women victims of human trafficking. (Read more)
