The Japanese Government has agreed to provide USD 90,834 in funding to build a silk centre at the Royal University of Phnom Penh to enhance knowledge and production of silk in Cambodia.

According to H.E. Mr. Hidehisa Horinouchi, Ambassador of Japan in the Kingdom of Cambodia, local silk makers have recently faced the issue of silkworm disease issue, which has dramatically decreased production. The centre is being created to help solve that problem by producing high quality silkworm eggs for locals and to provide training on the technical aspects of the entire silk-making procedure. The aim is that local artisans can produce silk more effectively and efficiency.

Construction of the new silk centre will be begin in March and is expected to take about one year to complete.

The silk centre project is a part of the ‘Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, KUSANONE’ worth USD 384,817. This fund will help build four projects including the silk centre, a vegetable shipping centre in Kandal Province, the rehabilitation of an irrigation system in Kampong Chhnang Province and road improvements in Koh Kong Province.
