Japan’s US$30m Grant Kickstarts Groundbreaking Water Supply Project in Svay Rieng

The commencement of the US$30.6 million Svay Rieng Water Supply System Expansion Project marks a pivotal step towards addressing the province’s water needs. Announced by the Svay Rieng provincial administration via their official Facebook page on 11 April 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony signifies the onset of a project set to redefine the area’s infrastructure landscape.

At the construction site’s inauguration, HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, alongside HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, graced the occasion, underscoring the significance of international collaboration in propelling developmental initiatives.

This groundbreaking venture, funded by the Government of Japan through JICA, commenced on 20 January 2024, with a projected completion date set for 15 December 2025, ushering in a new era of enhanced water accessibility and quality for Svay Rieng residents.

Noteworthy features of the project include the augmentation of the water supply system’s capacity, slated to produce an impressive 6,800 cubic metres of clean water daily, alongside the installation of 111.8 kilometres of pipeline infrastructure. Such advancements promise to alleviate water scarcity concerns and foster sustainable development in the province.
