Japan to Transform Cambodian Agriculture with Expansion of Cashew Processing Plant in Preah Vihear

Mirarth Agri Teach Co., Ltd., a Japanese enterprise, has unveiled plans to significantly expand its cashew processing plant in Preah Vihear province. The ambitious project, discussed during a meeting on 25 December 2023, between HE Dr Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and Mr Sasaki Koji, CEO of Mirarth Agri Teach Co., Ltd, seeks to amplify the plant’s capacity to an impressive 20,000 tons annually, leveraging green energy technologies.

Mr Sasaki Koji, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and shared insights into its successful medium-sized investment projects that have surpassed the 1,000-ton mark. The expanded cashew processing plant, equipped with cutting-edge technology imported from Japan, will not only process cashew nuts and husks but will also incorporate eco-friendly practices, aligning with global environmental standards.

Minister Eang Sophalleth commended the initiative, emphasising its positive impact on local communities. The project is poised to elevate livelihoods by fostering cashew tree cultivation, thereby enhancing forest cover and providing a sustainable income source for the community. Additionally, the expansion aims to reduce dependence on forests for non-timber products and curb detrimental activities like wildlife hunting. Cashew trees, known for their carbon-absorbing qualities, will contribute to environmental conservation by absorbing carbon dioxide and enriching the atmosphere with oxygen.

The minister underscored the project’s alignment with the key strategies outlined in the Environmental Strategy 2023-2028, emphasising the importance of investments that directly benefit communities while promoting clean, green, and sustainable practices.

This venture echoes the recent strides in Cambodia’s agricultural landscape, exemplified by CSNC Agriculture’s US$12 million investment in a large cashew processing plant in Kampong Thom province. The collective efforts of international and local enterprises signify a pivotal shift towards environmentally conscious and economically beneficial agricultural practices. (Read more)
