Korean-Led Initiative Advances Wastewater & Solid Waste Management in Cambodia’s Battambang

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport, in partnership with the Global Green Development Institute (GGGI), is embarking on a feasibility study to bolster these crucial systems in Battambang province. This noteworthy initiative is a part of the Low Carbon City Development Project, which strives to promote sustainable access to services in Battambang City.

During the project’s initial feasibility study discussion on 1 September 2023, Battambang City and Mong Russey district towns were pinpointed as focal areas for data collection. The goal is to thoroughly evaluate the potential for advancing wastewater management and solid waste systems in these locations.

This multifaceted project serves several key purposes. Firstly, it seeks to introduce the concept of a circular economy for solid waste management within the city. Secondly, it aims to identify gaps in existing wastewater and solid waste management systems. Thirdly, it’s geared toward crafting projects tailored to the actual needs of municipalities and districts. Lastly, it fosters vital discussions with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors.

The meeting, which endorsed the preliminary study’s outcomes, has paved the way for the next steps in the detailed study process. As Cambodia sets its sights on realising the 2025 project, the GGGI consultants have been entrusted with further research, the establishment of efficient operating and maintenance mechanisms, and sustainable project development.
