Cambodia Completes 271 Rural Road Projects in 2024, Enhancing Accessibility Across Remote Areas

The Cambodian government has announced the successful completion of 271 rural road projects in 2024, significantly boosting transportation accessibility for remote communities. The Ministry of Rural Development presented these achievements during a year-end meeting on 9 December 2024, highlighting the construction and improvement of approximately 940.71 kilometers of double-paved roads and outlining strategic plans for further progress in 2025.

Minister of Rural Development, HE Chhay Rithi Sen, detailed the ministry’s accomplishments, noting that Cambodia’s rural road infrastructure now spans 50,262 kilometers. This total comprises 6,723 kilometers of paved roads, 1,804 kilometers of concrete roads, and an extensive 31,704 kilometers of gravel roads.

Key achievements in 2024 include the enhancement of 164.21 kilometers of concrete roads, 218.05 kilometers of gravel roads, and the construction of 12 new concrete bridges spanning a combined 675 meters. Additionally, maintenance and repair work was conducted on 404 lines totaling 4,272 kilometers, ensuring the durability and safety of these essential routes.

The ministry has also set ambitious goals for the coming year, focusing on three primary objectives:

  1. Expanding and improving the quality of rural road infrastructure to better serve the growing needs of rural communities.
  2. Strengthening and broadening rural road maintenance and service coverage to ensure long-term accessibility and efficiency.
  3. Researching and adopting innovative technologies, including developing updated technical standards and using advanced materials such as stabilizers.

These infrastructure upgrades are crucial in transforming rural transportation networks, reducing travel times, and facilitating economic activities for Cambodia’s rural population. Beyond transportation, the improved roads are expected to enhance access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and markets, significantly raising residents’ overall quality of life.
