Ministry of Environment Acts Against Illegal Waste Discharge in Cambodia

In a significant move to safeguard the environment, the Ministry of Environment has reported the detection of over 1.3 million cubic meters of liquid waste illegally discharged by nearly 30 factories and commercial establishments across Cambodia. This alarming finding underscores the potential risks posed to the nation’s ecosystems and public health.

According to a recent report by the Phnom Penh Post, inspections conducted by the General Department of Environmental Protection revealed that these companies discharged approximately 227,760 cubic meters of waste in just one month, averaging about 11,388 cubic meters daily. In response to these findings, the Ministry has taken decisive action, issuing a series of directives, modification letters, and interim fines aimed at curbing these practices.

The Ministry’s commitment extends beyond enforcement; it includes a comprehensive strategy to modernize monitoring systems and enhance legal frameworks to prevent future occurrences of environmental pollution. This initiative aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility among businesses and foster sustainable practices throughout various industries.

Notably, the majority of the identified facilities are located in Kampong Speu province, with additional cases found in Preah Sihanouk, Tbong Khmum, Phnom Penh, Kandal, Battambang, and Kampot provinces. The Ministry is determined to address these challenges head-on and protect Cambodia’s rich natural resources for future generations.

As these efforts unfold, stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate and prioritize environmental stewardship to ensure a healthy, sustainable future for all.
