MPWT, Japan Accelerate Work on East Siem Reap Smart City Master Plan

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and the Japan Ministry of Transport held an online meeting on Thursday 29 July to discuss the initial feasibility study result of the east Siem Reap smart city master plan and wastewater treatment and sanitation system enhancement project.

The discussion was chaired by MPWT Under Secretary of State HE Kem Borey and attended by the Ministry of Transport of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Overall, the meeting discussed the methods and conditions of wastewater management and sanitation that are necessary before moving toward smart city development.

The discussion was also focused on studing how to improve and manage construction development for rapidly developing areas nationwide.

According to a plan previously unveiled by MPWT, three zones in Siem Reap province including the city zone, historical heritage zone and Tonle Sap zone, have been preliminarily chosen as the target development area.

The plan will also include upgrading the security system, transportation, and waste management, among others, while the timeline of the project is set for 2020 to 2031. (Read more)

Although Siem Reap is currently under pressure from the decline of tourism caused by the pandemic, the Cambodian government continues to develop more infrastructure in the province.

Work on the 38-road renovation for instance is thus far over 63% complete as of late June.
