MPWT to Repave & Expand Sections of NR8 to 4 Lanes, Construction Expected to Begin in 2024

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) plans to repave and widen some sections of NR8 to four lanes, with construction expected to begin in 2024 as the project is already on the five-year prioritized list for use of loans from China.

Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol said in Facebook Liveshow on Monday 30 August that the budget for the NR8 renovation project has been shifted from the government to a Chinese loan.

“We first planned to renovate this road using the government budget. However, due to the pandemic, we have to focus on prioritized expenditure. Thus, the ministry reclassified the project and put it in the prioritized list using a China concessional loan,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

“By 2023 or 2024, we will start renovation by paving another layer over the existing road. We will also expand some sections which are highly-congested from two lanes to four lanes,” he added.

NR8 is 90km long, stretching from the junction with NR6 at Prek Kdam Bridge in Kandal province to Punhea Kraek district in Kampong Cham province crossing Prey Veng province.
