Natural Canal Rehabilitation Project in Sihanoukville 90% Complete

The 27-kilometre natural canal restoration project in Sihanoukville has been going smoothly and is now 42% complete, according to a report from the General Department of Wastewater Treatment System of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

This natural canal rehabilitation project is being implemented by the General Department of Wastewater Treatment System in collaboration with a Chinese firm BUCG using the national budget.

According to the report, the major works being carried out on this project include the restoration of Boeung Prek, the construction of a pumping station in front of the provincial hall, and the construction of the Sihanoukville wastewater treatment plant.

Provincial authorities expect that after the completion of the project, the flooding issue in vulnerable areas will be mitigated.

Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol said during a site inspection on 06 February that this wastewater management infrastructure was built in response to the excessive amount of wastewater produced in the city that caused the increase of investment projects such as condominiums, resorts and commercial buildings in recent years.

Besides the natural canal dredging, another wastewater treatment plant worth more than US$140 million is also currently being built in Sihanoukville. As of January, the project was over 48% complete. (Read more)
