NBC Implements Loan Cancellation and Relief Measures for Soldiers Affected by the Cambodia-Thailand War

In a significant move to support the soldiers impacted by the recent Cambodia-Thailand conflict, the National Bank of Cambodia has announced a series of financial relief measures aimed at easing the burden on veterans and their families.

Under the new directive, banking and financial institutions are instructed to cancel loans of up to 80 million riel for customers and co-borrowers who were soldiers who lost their lives during the war. Additionally, disabled veterans will see their loans of up to 10 million riel wiped out as part of the initiative to honor their service and sacrifices.

The National Bank’s instructions further include a moratorium on all loan-related fees and penalties for soldiers who actively participated in the conflict. This relief period will extend for six months, lasting until January 31, 2026. During this timeframe, interest payments will be waived, and principal repayments postponed. Notably, financial institutions are prohibited from capitalizing interest during this period, ensuring that veterans receive substantial support.

Refugees affected by the conflict are also set to benefit from the new measures. The National Bank has mandated the suspension of all fees and penalties for loans from now until October 31, 2025, and similar provisions for interest and principal payments.

In addition to these specific measures, the National Bank encourages all banking and financial institutions to continue restructuring loans for other affected customers and to consider offering additional support to workers returning from Thailand and to troops deployed in combat operations.

These initiatives reflect the National Bank of Cambodia’s commitment to providing timely financial assistance and support to those who have served the nation during challenging times, reinforcing the importance of solidarity and compassion within the community.
