PPWSA Seeks Understanding from the Public When Bak Kheng 2 Water Treatment Plant Unveiled on 3 March

In a significant stride towards enhancing water supply infrastructure, the Bak Kheng Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant, alongside a monumental 2,000mm diameter water pipeline beneath the Tonle Sap, is set to commence operations at midday on 3 March 2024. This pivotal project, orchestrated by the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA), aims to bolster water pressure across Phnom Penh and Takhmao, marking a notable improvement in the region’s water distribution network. The announcement, made on 1 March 2024, underscores the authority’s commitment to addressing the growing water supply demands of the city, according to Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority’s official announcement letter dated 1 March 2024.

The inauguration of this phase is anticipated to temporarily introduce leaks in water distribution pipes across public areas and residential frontages, potentially leading to water contamination. Considering this, the PPWSA has appealed for public cooperation, urging residents to report any instances of leaks or muddy water by contacting their hotline numbers: 097 7 71 1179 or 097 651 2222. Such measures are in place to ensure prompt inspection, repair, and cleaning operations by the authority’s dedicated teams.

The construction of this extensive pipeline, which began in February 2023, was initially slated for completion by 29 February via the official Facebook page of the PPWSA. However, the operation was officially rescheduled, with formal announcements made through a notification dated 1 March. The pipeline, extending under the Tonle Sap River from the east to the west bank of the 540-metre-long Prek Pnov bridge, has been aptly named the “Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen Great Water Pipeline.” This engineering feat not only symbolises technological advancement but also represents critical infrastructure development for the region.
