PM Hun Sen: Gov’t to spend approx. US$100m in electricity loss this year

The Cambodian government estimates that in 2022, Cambodia may lose approximately US$100 million of the national budget to electricity expenses, due to rising fuel prices caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen stated on 6 July that investment in electricity has already been operating at a loss; however, the government decided not to increase the price to ease the burden on the public.

“Without the government’s support to Electricite du Cambodge (EDC), the price of electricity in Cambodia should have already doubled. The government is ready to subsidize the loss of EDC,” said PM Hun Sen.

PM Hun Sen also urged every to help save electricity, in particular government institutions that use the national budget to pay for electricity expenses.
