Gov’t Unveils Transformative Irrigation & Drainage System Projects in West Tonle Sap & Phnom Penh

The Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology (MWRM) officially launched the West Tonle Sap Irrigation and Drainage System Rehabilitation Project, showcasing Cambodia’s commitment to agricultural advancement. The event also marked the commencement of the Southwest Phnom Penh Irrigation and Drainage System Rehabilitation Project under Japanese development assistance. The momentous ceremony was presided over by the HE Tho Chetha, Minister of MWRM on 7 December 2023.

Minister Tho Chetha emphasized that these initiatives focused on the rehabilitation of irrigation and drainage systems, fortification of water user farmers’ communities, and the provision of agricultural extension services, have yielded remarkable results. The projects have not only increased rice production but have also elevated the income and livelihoods of local farmers.

Commencing on 28 March 2016, and successfully concluding on 31 December 2020, the West Tonle Sap project rejuvenated the irrigation systems in Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, and Battambang provinces. Covering 13,393 hectares of farmland, it has significantly benefited 26,318 families, equivalent to 57,572 people, leading to a remarkable increase in rice yields from 1.50 to 3.60 tons/hectare.

Simultaneously, the Southwest Phnom Penh project, initiated on 13 June 2023, with an expected completion date of 26 June 2026, aims to enhance the irrigation and drainage system in Kampong Speu, Kandal, and Takeo provinces. This ambitious venture, facilitated by Japanese support, is set to cover 23,831 hectares of farmland, benefiting 7,925 families (44,157 people), with an anticipated rise in rice yields from 2.20 to 3.80 tons/hectare.

In a significant stride towards furthering this transformative agenda, Japan has committed a loan of 2,482 million yen (approximately US$18.24 million) for the second phase of the project, aimed at enhancing and rehabilitating Phnom Penh’s southwest irrigation and drainage system. (Read more)
