NR 33 Rehabilitation Gains Momentum: 40% Completion Ready for Sea Festival

Progress on the rehabilitation of Cambodia’s vital National Road 33 is well underway, with completion inching closer to reality. As of 27 October 2023, the ambitious project, aimed at enhancing the quality of this crucial transport artery, has reached nearly 40% completion. This substantial achievement underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the road is ready for the upcoming Sea Festival.

A recent site visit led by HE Pal Chandara, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, along with a technical working group from China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) and a representative from Guangzhou Wang An Technical Advisory Company, provided an opportunity to assess progress.

The project’s advancements are impressive, with key milestones already met:

  1. Road Widening: Approximately 52.57 kilometres of the road have been cleared and widened to accommodate the growing traffic demands.
  2. Sub-grade Work: An impressive 49.87 kilometres of sub-grade work have been successfully executed, ensuring a solid foundation for the road.
  3. Sub-Base Paving: The sub-base has been paved over 37.66 kilometres, enhancing the road’s structural integrity.

HE Secretary of State Pal Chandara has emphasised the importance of maintaining safety on-site. Measures include prominently placed warning signs, traffic diversion signs, and adequate safety equipment to facilitate the movement of goods and people. Ensuring the well-being of the local community is a priority, particularly as preparations intensify for the forthcoming Sea Festival.

This extensive project, designed to revitalise National Road 33, has been allocated more than US$61 million in funding. This funding comprises a concessional loan from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, supplemented by the contributions of the Royal Government of Cambodia, which is earmarked for mitigating impacts and taxes.
