Irrigation Rehabilitation Project in Southwest Phnom Penh Reaches 25% Completion

The extensive rehabilitation project aimed at enhancing the irrigation and drainage systems in Kampong Speu, Takeo, and Kandal provinces has reached 25% completion, as confirmed by HE Pich Veasna, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, on 22 August 2024. This milestone was announced during an inspection of the project’s progress, conducted alongside the JICA High-Level Delegation and other stakeholders.

This critical project encompasses the Roleang Chrey Irrigation System in Chbar Morn City and Samrong Tong district, Kampong Speu Province, as well as the Kandal Stung-Bati Irrigation System spanning Kandal Steung district in Kandal Province and Bati district in Takeo province. The ongoing construction is part of a broader initiative funded through concessional financing from the Royal Government of Japan. (Read more)

HE Pich Veasna emphasised the importance of prioritising the safety of workers and local residents throughout the project’s duration. Additionally, he instructed the project’s Technical Advisor and the construction company to ensure that machinery and materials were adequately prepared to mitigate flood risks in Stung Prek Tnaot.

Upon completion, the Roleang Chrey irrigation system will have the capacity to irrigate 16,910 hectares of rice paddies twice a year, alongside 1,500 hectares of dry rice. Meanwhile, the Stung-Bati irrigation system is expected to provide irrigation water three times a year, significantly increasing the cultivation of rain-fed rice by approximately 1,200 hectares, wet-season rice by 2,011 hectares, and dry-season rice by 400 hectares.
