Total power supply reaches 3.382 MW in 2019

Power supply generated from different power sources reached 3.382 MW in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 28% compared to 2018. Government officials said that the increasing power supply was due to the high demand of power consumption amid rapid development.

Data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy shows that as of 2019, main power sources comprise of seven active hydropower dams cumulatively generating 1.328 MW, and three coal-fired power plants generating 675 MW.

In addition, the power generated from diesel-fired power plants was recorded as 627 MW, solar PV as 123 MW, and power imports from Thailand, Vietnam and Laos as 626 MW.

H.E. Suy Sem, Minister of Mines and Energy, said that given that power consumption is increasing, the government has to find power supply from other sources to feed the demand with a better price.

Due to high demand, the government has so far approved a number of power development projects. Last year alone, there were 6 solar PV projects, a coal-fired power plant, a diesel-fired power plant, and a hydropower dam. All generate power of 1.500 MW in total.
