Cambodia is taking a major step toward a safer, greener, and more sustainable future through a progressive national infrastructure initiative. On July 14, 2026, the Royal Government of Cambodia announced a historic cooperation agreement to invest five million US dollars in deploying advanced solar-powered street lighting along public roads and highways throughout the country. This strategic undertaking was formalized during a high-profile Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony, presided over by Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, and Keo Rottanak, Minister of Mines and Energy.

The primary objective of this joint venture is to revolutionize the safety and security of Cambodia’s public transit network. By installing highly efficient, eco-friendly solar lights, the government aims to dramatically reduce nighttime traffic accidents, protect local travelers, and enhance overall public security in urban and rural areas alike. Adequate nighttime lighting plays a crucial role in preventing crime and minimizing driving hazards, making this program a significant quality-of-life upgrade for citizens across the nation.

Under this ambitious two-year deployment plan, the state-of-the-art solar lighting systems will be strategically rolled out across thirteen capitals and provinces, including the busy roads of Phnom Penh. The dual-ministry coordination, supported closely by the Phnom Penh Capital Administration and various provincial administrations, is designed to deliver the direct benefits of modern energy development straight to the public. This collaborative project reflects a shared national vision to incorporate renewable energy into daily infrastructure, reducing reliance on the main electricity grid while beautifying Cambodia’s landscape.
