US$100 million water reservoir in Preah Vihear 41.5% completed

The US$100 million water reservoir project on which construction started in November 2019 is now 41.5%, according to an official press release from the Preah Vihear provincial administration on 25 June 2020.

The project is being developed by The Consortium of Guangdong Foreign Construction Co., Ltd. & Guangdong Yuantian Engineering Co., Ltd. The total construction period is 39 months and is expected to be completed by 2022.

The reservoir capacity can maintain approximately 256. 9 million cubic metres of water and can supply approximately 143, 323 hectares of agricultural water in the wet season and 22, 878 hectares in the dry season.

In terms of benefits, with this large water storage capacity, the dam will contribute significantly to flooding prevention and water supply in some areas downstream. According to the Preah Vihear provincial administration, the reservoir is located in Preah Vihear province, but most of the water flowing through this irrigation project will cover most areas in Kampong Thom province.

In addition to serving agriculture and flooding disaster relief purposes, the dam will also be used for tourism purposes.

According to Preah Vihear Deputy Governor H.E Kousom Bunsoeut, this project is an offer from Samdech Techo and who has assigned the Ministry of Water Resources to implement it. (Read More)
