Vietnam Sets Goal of Increasing Renewable Energy Mix to 75% by 2045

Vietnam has set its power development plan with a focus on reducing emissions to the environment through increasing renewable energy from solar and wind.

As of 2025, Vietnam has to achieve the goal of having at least 75% of national power production capacity generated from renewable energy, said its Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26) last month.

Vietnam’s goal is to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the VN Express reported this week.

Vietnam has a large potential for renewable energy development with around 217 gigawatts of onshore wind power, 160 gigawatts of offshore wind power and 434 gigawatts of solar power (including rooftop panels), according to Hoang Tien Dung, head of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority.

The development of renewable energy will bring Vietnam many benefits including lower operating costs because renewable energy costs are set to decline in the upcoming decades while those of fossil fuel sources are set to rise, he said.
