Cambodia Seeks Japan’s aid on Infrastructure Development

Cambodian government through the Ministry of Public Works and Transports has asked Japanese government to help development the main projects in the sector of infrastructure, particularly building railway system in Phnom Penh and other projects in provinces.

The appeal was made during a recent meeting between H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transports and H.E. Minorikawa Nobuhide, State Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan, in Vietnam’s Hanoi.

According to information from the ministry, the two sides discussed focussing on cooperation in infrastructure, roads, bridges, traffic management system, waste water system and treatment, and ports.

H.E. Sun Chanthol sought Japanese investment for construction of Phnom Penh’s Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) to facilitate passengers and reduce traffic congestion and accidents in Phnom Penh.

Additionally, he requested the same assistance to other major provincial cities, especially the costal provincial cities of Kampot and Koh Kong.

H.E Sun Chanthol expressed his high admiration to Japanese newly assistance for the construction of Phnom Penh Waste Water Treatment Plant as well as a new traffic management system in Phnom Penh.

The construction of an AGT system for Cambodia’s capital city has move slowly, partly because of a lack of investors to finance the massive costs, which is estimated at around US$800 million.

Japan is among the biggest providers of assistance to Cambodia. Last year, the Kingdom was the recipient of US$135 million in aid package, which came in the form of grants and soft loans
