Sihanoukville Airport Runway Expansion Complete

The runway restoration and expansion at Sihanoukville International Airport has been completed and is scheduled to officially open by the end of 2020, according to the Sihanoukville Provincial Administration.

The blessing ceremony for the completion of this new runway was held on 13 October under the presidency of Minister of the Secretariat of Civil Aviation HE Mao Havanna and Sihanoukville Governor HE Kuoch Chamroeun.

The runway has been extended from 2,500 metres to 3,300 metres with an investment of US$58 million, in response to the increase in the number of passengers. (Read more)

This expansion will allow the airport to accommodate large aircraft (code E) such as the B-777-300ER or A-350-1000, which operate direct long-haul flights to Sihanoukville.

Between 2015 and 2019, passengers grew from 94,000 to 1.6+ million passengers and the airport had been experiencing triple-digit growth nearly every year.

CEO of Cambodia Airports Alain BRUN says: “To sustain the development of Sihanoukville, an efficient airport system and increasing air connectivity are critical. Upgrading the runway capacity provides new growth opportunities as airlines can operate bigger aircraft flying from/to more remote markets such as the European one.”

Besides the runway expansion, Cambodia Airports has also unveiled its 20-year master plan for the facility through to 2040. The long-term master plan has been developed to enhance the capacity of the airport by handling the increasing volume of passengers, both investors and tourists, and cargo. (Read more)
