Major Infrastructure Projects Broken Ground in 2021

Although 2021 was hit hard by the COVD-19 pandemic with several lockdowns and the spread of new variants, the Cambodian government has continuously upgraded and built infrastructure projects. Thus far, none of the infrastructure projects has been delayed. Here is the list of the major infrastructure projects that saw ground broken in 2021.

US$19 million Siem Reap Provincial Hospital Building_Detail

The construction of a new building in the Siem Reap Provincial Hospital under a JICA grant aid of approximately US$19 million has officially begun.

Held on Thursday 23 December, the ground-breaking ceremony was presided over by the Director of Siem Reap Provincial Health Department Dr Kros Sarath and joined by other relevant officers.

The building has an area of 7,260 square meters, 4 floors, and a total of 220 beds, which will be used for specialised services, surgery, emergency services and other related services.

New US$25-million National Assembly Building_Detail

Construction has officially begun for the new US$25-million administration building of the National Assembly.

The ground-breaking ceremony was presided over on 21 December.

The project is located within the National Assembly complex, on a total area of 27m by 29m of land. The building is 12-floors high with two floors of underground parking that can accommodate up to 260 vehicles.

US$22-million Japanese-Funded Clean Water System in Pursat_Detail

The Government of Japan has provided US$21.9 million in grant aid to build a new water supply system in Pursat province to increase access to clean water for the local people.

The ground-breaking ceremony of this water supply system took place on 13 December.

New Public Beach Resort Development in Kep_Detail

The National Committee for Coastal Management and Development (NCCMD) has begun work on a project to transform a 2.7-kilometre-long area in Phum Thmey village in Kep province into a public beach resort.

The tasks include recreating a 30-metre-wide and 2700-metre-long beach as well as a 50-metre-wide and 2700-metre-long public park.

US$129-million NR71C Connecting Tbong Khmum- Kampong Cham_Detail

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the NR71C construction project on 23 November.

The road has a total length of 114.62 km, starting from 154km + 700 points of NR7 in Sralop commune, Tbong Khmum district, Tbong Khmum province, and ending at 30km + 400 of NR71 in Svay Teap commune, Chamkar Leu district, Kampong Cham province.

The road is 11 metres wide, paved with 7cm thick AC, with 2 U-Turn points, 11 bridges, and 202 spots of drainage systems.

New US$60m Ministry of Interior Headquarters Building_Detail

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new US$60-million Ministry of Interior headquarters building was officially held on Thursday 11 November in the presence of Minister of Interior Samdech Sar Kheng.

The new office is located in the 5.6 hectares of the original ministry complex. With a total net area of 105,545sqm, the building is 153 metres by 83 metres, consisting of 9 floors or equal to 43.5 metres, excluding the ground floor and parking that can accommodate 330 cars.

US$27 million Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant_Detail 

The construction of the Japanese-funded US$27-million sewage system and a large-scale treatment plant in Choeung Ek officially began in late May and is scheduled for completion in November 2023.

SHV’s Third Large-Scale Water Treatment Plant_Detail

The Sihanoukville Provincial Administration has officially begun construction of the third large-scale water treatment plant, in response to the gradual increase of wastewater due to the growth of commercial and tourism activities.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday 17 September.

Located in Village 4 of Sangkat 4, the third wastewater treatment plant (PS3) is being built over 1.12 hectares of land and will have the capacity to treat wastewater up to 20,000 cubic metres per day.

MPWT New Laboratory Centre_Detail

Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol this morning broke ground on a new laboratory centre building within the Techo Sen Institute of Public Works and Transport.

Funded by South Korea with a budget of US$580,000, the laboratory building has two floors and consists of different sectors including an asphalt test lab, concrete test lab, curing room, storage room, and administration office.

Land Ministry National Construction Laboratory_Detail

The construction of the National Construction Laboratory has officially begun as a ground-breaking ceremony was held this morning under the presence of the Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction HE Chea Sophara.

The building will be built within the new ministry complex and will be constructed as a two-storey building and divided into three sections. Upon completion, the laboratory will be used as a general research centre, to conduct construction experiments, as well as construction equipment and product testing.

US$1.5-million Port in Koh Kong_Detail

The Ministry of Public Works and Koh Kong provincial hall on 13 May broke ground on the construction of a new port worth US$1.5 million, to facilitate the travel of tourists and the transport of agricultural goods.

Located on Prek Koh Por River in Smach Meanchey district, Khemarak Phoumin city, the new port will be 69 metres long and 16.5 metres wide. The project also includes the construction of two concrete bridges, 8 metres wide and 8-metres-long.
