Malaysia’s China Railway Group Expresses Interest in Cambodia’s High-Speed Rail Project

Malaysia’s China Railway Group Limited (CREC) has expressed keen interest in investing in Cambodia’s public transport infrastructure project. HE Touch Chankosal, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, met with a delegation from CREC on 9 March 2023, to discuss the possibility of the company investing in a high-speed train project in Cambodia.

The interest shown by CREC comes after Cambodia’s Prime Minister requested China Metro Group Limited to conduct a feasibility study on two light and high-speed rail projects in Phnom Penh and one in Siem Reap to alleviate traffic congestion.

CREC has its regional headquarters based in Malaysia and offers various services, including design, construction, real estate development, investment, finance, and transportation.

HE Touch Chankosal stated, “The Ministry of Public Works and Transport welcomes and supports any investors who are interested in Cambodia’s transport infrastructure development.” The interest of the company shows the potential of high-speed rail projects in Cambodia, which could help boost economic growth and regional connectivity.

This investment opportunity could pave the way for future collaborations between Cambodia and Malaysia, as both countries look to improve their infrastructure and support economic growth. The government’s goal is to tackle congestion and reduce transportation costs in the country. (Read more)
