Cambodia Seeks China’s Assistance to Build Five Roads for New Economic Pole Development

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has requested China’s assistance in constructing five crucial roads in the northwestern and western provinces of Cambodia to hasten the establishment of the fourth economic pole.  

The pole is expected to cover four provinces, namely Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, and Pailin. During a meeting with people in the Stung Pursat 1 Dam area on 14 March, Hun Sen emphasised the importance of China’s investment in the construction of Route 55, Route 56, Route 57, Route 57B, and Route 59.  

“We are going to set the fourth economic pole, and I firmly hope that our friend, China, would help us,” said the prime minister. 

Apart from the infrastructure development, Samdech Hun Sen also highlighted the need to enhance the Stueng Pursat 1 Dam’s tourism potential by building more tourist sites and resorts.  

Meanwhile, Cambodia informed Thailand of the plan to establish the Fourth Economic Pole to strengthen the trade partnership along the Cambodian-Thai border. (Read more)

During his official visit to China, Samdech Hun Sen discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping the plan to establish the fourth economic corridor called “the fish-rice corridor,” which China has expressed interest in. The Chinese government has also promised to encourage more Chinese investors to invest in Cambodia in the future. (Read more)

This infrastructure development plan is expected to attract more local and foreign investors to the western and northwestern provinces of Cambodia, which would further spur economic growth and provide more opportunities for the real estate industry to flourish.
