Milestone Achievement in Kampong Cham as Mekong River Bank Protection Project Reaches Completion

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has announced the successful completion of a significant riverbank protection project along the Mekong River in Kampong Cham province. Spanning 700 meters in length, this second phase of construction has reached one hundred percent completion, marking a vital step in safeguarding local infrastructure and livelihoods against the relentless forces of erosion. According to an official statement released on December 19, 2025, the project has undergone thorough inspections and evaluations by relevant parties to ensure its adherence to high engineering standards before the official handover.

During a recent site visit to witness the progress firsthand, His Excellency Sot Reaksmei, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, confirmed the total completion of the works located in Prek Sdey village, Preah Andong commune, within the Stung Trang district. The Secretary of State highlighted the strategic importance of this 700-meter fortification, which is designed to stabilize the riverbank and prevent the further loss of land to the water’s flow. This area has historically been vulnerable to seasonal water level fluctuations and the aggressive scouring of the Mekong’s current, necessitating proactive engineering solutions.

The inter-ministerial working group tasked with monitoring the project expressed their high appreciation for the Department of Hydrology and River Works. The team was commended for their dedication and for completing the construction within the designated timeframe while strictly following the required technical specifications. This project is a critical component of the Ministry’s broader strategic plan for 2024 to 2028, which aims to enhance water resource management and mitigate the risks posed by natural disasters across Cambodia.

Beyond the immediate technical achievement, the completion of this bank protection provides a sense of security for the residents of Preah Andong commune. Riverbank erosion remains a chronic challenge in the Mekong basin, with certain hotspots in Kampong Cham province historically experiencing significant annual land loss that threatens homes and farmland. By investing in robust physical defenses like this one, the government continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and the protection of riparian communities.
