Cambodia and ITF Collaborate to Enhance ASEAN Transport Connectivity

Cambodia is partnering with the International Transport Forum (ITF) to improve regional transport connectivity within the Southeast Asian region. Representatives from approximately 60 ITF member countries and officials from relevant institutions recently gathered to discuss a project aimed at reducing the transportation gap between countries in the region to lower the cost of shipping and transportation.

This initiative also includes the formulation of a green transport strategy to minimize pollution by improving transportation links between Asia and Europe and transportation between waterways, land, and sea.

According to HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the development of transport infrastructure and connectivity is crucial in promoting Cambodia’s national economy. As such, the Royal Government of Cambodia is in the process of finalizing a comprehensive master plan on transportation, the Cambodian Intermediate 2022-2030 (CIT-MP). This plan includes 150 hard and soft infrastructure development projects with an estimated investment of approximately US$30 billion.

Dr. Young Tae Kim, Secretary General of the ITF, highlighted that the ITF Forum is helping Cambodia by providing capacity building, recommendations, and sharing experiences in organizing transport connections, without providing funds to build infrastructure. Cambodia became the first member of the International Transport Forum in Southeast Asia in 2022. The forum comprises about 64 members, primarily from 40 countries in Europe and more than 20 countries in Asia.

As Cambodia continues to strengthen its transport infrastructure and connectivity, it is likely to attract more investment and business opportunities, further contributing to the growth of the national economy and the Southeast Asian region as a whole.
