Chinese Experts to Assess Potential for New Energy Power Plants in Sihanoukville and Koh Kong Provinces

At the end of May 2023, a team of Chinese experts from the China Development Institute (CDI) will embark on a visit to Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces, with the aim of exploring opportunities for the construction of new energy power stations, focusing on solar and wind energy.

This significant development was announced by Mr Ouk Pheaktra, Deputy Governor of Koh Kong Province, following his delegation’s visit to CDI in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China, on 6th May 2023.

During the visit, Dr Qu Jian, Vice President of CDI, expressed that the Royal Government of Cambodia has outlined plans to study the growth potential of coastal provinces, including Koh Kong. Dr Qu Jian, having surveyed Sihanoukville, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong provinces, extensively captured the geographical landscapes of Koh Kong through the use of drones.

The CDI Vice President further emphasized that among these four provinces, Koh Kong possesses the most favorable geographic conditions for the development of deep-sea ports, free trade zones, and the establishment of new energy infrastructure. Such investments in the new energy sector are crucial for promoting Cambodia’s economic progress.

Dr Qu Jian unveiled the CDI’s upcoming agenda, stating that their expert team will conduct on-site studies in Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces at the end of May 2023, with a specific focus on evaluating suitable locations for the construction of new energy power plants, harnessing the potential of solar and wind energy.

CDI is a prestigious think tank research institute that was established in the 1980s and is approved by the State Council. Renowned for its expertise in economic policy, trade, urban planning, special economic zones, and free trade, CDI is a respected research and consulting body recognized by the Chinese government.

The CDI has previously assisted the Cambodian government in developing a master plan to transform Sihanoukville into a multifaceted model special economic zone, taking inspiration from Shenzhen, with an impressive 50% completion rate. (Read more)
