Phnom Penh-ho Chi Minh Rail Link Proposed

Cambodia has proposed a Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh railway plan to Vietnam as a consideration to boost connectivity between the two countries.

The proposal was made during an official meeting between the Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol and Deputy Minister of Transport of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Nhat at Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) early this week to discuss strategic cooperation within the transport sector.

The railway would connect Phnom Penh to Bavet and on to Ho Chi Minh City. At this stage, the project is still only a proposed development plan and will require further study on how to attract investors to commit to the project.

According a MPWT spokesman Va Sim Soriya, the project is part of the ‘Cooperation Strategy in the Transport Sector (2018-2025)’ MoU between the two countries. The MoU itself has been finalised and will be signed by the leaders of the two Ministries soon.

In addition, the planned expressway between Phnom Penh- Neak Loeung-Bavet plan is also being studied with the involvement of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is also involved.
