JETRO Commits to Boost Japanese Investment in Cambodia

In a significant move to strengthen economic ties, the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Japanese investment in Cambodia. This announcement came during an official meeting between Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet and Mr. Ishiguro Norihiko, JETRO’s President and CEO, during a visit to Tokyo from 28-31 May 2025.

During their discussions, Mr. Norihiko expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration with the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce in organising the Cambodia-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo. The forum, which attracted a substantial turnout of representatives from both Japanese and Cambodian businesses, aims to enhance bilateral trade relations. Mr. Norihiko also highlighted plans for a JETRO delegation that will bring Japanese investors to Cambodia to explore new investment opportunities.

Prime Minister Hun Manet praised JETRO’s significant role in facilitating the business forum, emphasising its importance as a platform for enhancing Cambodia-Japan trade relations. He reiterated the Royal Government’s strategy to attract foreign investment through various incentives and a commitment to improving infrastructure, particularly in logistics. Key projects include developments in road networks, international airports, and deep-sea ports.

Moreover, the Prime Minister urged Japanese investors to consider the establishment of dedicated special economic zones (SEZs) tailored to their industries. This innovative approach would create a conducive business environment specifically designed for certain sectors, enhancing Cambodia’s appeal as an investment destination.

Supporting this initiative, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Japan Development Institute (JDI) are set to conduct further studies on potential SEZs that cater to specialised industries within Cambodia. (Read more and more)

In closing, the Prime Minister encouraged JETRO to continue acting as a vital link between Japanese and Cambodian investors, aiming to foster increased Japanese investment in the country. As Cambodia positions itself as a hub for international business, the continued support from JETRO and its partners could prove instrumental in realizing this vision.
