Cambodia Revs Up for Carbon Neutrality 2025: Electric Vehicles Take Centre Stage

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has announced a strategic push towards electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. This declaration, made by HE Peng Po, the Minister of MPWT, at the  International Transport Forum Summit, Germany on 23 May 2024, underscores Cambodia’s commitment to environmental sustainability, despite the country’s current lower CO2 emission levels compared to others.

The focus on EVs aligns with a long-term development strategy outlined by the government. This plan prioritises promoting electric vehicles while also exploring public transport initiatives that minimise fuel consumption and improve public health. The strategy acknowledges the positive impact these changes will have on Cambodia’s environment and public well-being.

Minister Peng Po emphasised the transport sector’s role in maintaining environmental sustainability and its impact on climate, health, and geopolitics during the meeting. He also highlighted the importance of international collaboration during the meeting. He emphasised Cambodia’s desire to work alongside other member countries of the ITF, development partners, and international organisations to achieve its ambitious environmental goals. This collaborative approach signifies Cambodia’s recognition of the global nature of climate change and the need for a unified effort to address it.
