Gov’t Waives Penalties for Expired Tour Guide Licenses to Boost Tourism Sector

The Cambodian government has announced it will waive all transitional penalties for tour guides and translators whose licenses have expired, extending this exemption until 31 December 2024. This measure, introduced to alleviate the compliance burden and encourage license renewals, was confirmed by the Ministry of Tourism on 23 August 2024.

The ministry’s announcement aims to incentivise tour guides and translators to renew their licenses without facing financial penalties, thereby promoting a robust recovery in the tourism sector. The waiver applies to all levels of tour guide licenses and is part of a broader effort to support the tourism industry as it rebounds from recent challenges.

Tour guides and translators with expired licenses are encouraged to renew them at their local Capital-Provincial Department of Tourism to benefit from this exemption.

The decision to implement this penalty waiver was made by Prime Minister Hun Manet on 22 August 2024, as a strategic move to support tour guides and enhance the appeal of Cambodia’s tourism industry.
