Cambodia Implements Strict Border Control Measures to Combat Illegal Activities

In a decisive move to address ongoing border security issues, the Cambodian Ministry of Interior has announced the closure of all illegal border crossing points across the country.

This directive, which went into effect on November 13, 2024, mandates provincial governors in border regions to enforce these measures strictly.

Under this new policy, the passage of people, goods, and any means of entry and exit through unauthorized corridors is strictly prohibited. Provincial governors are now held accountable for compliance within their jurisdictions and will face legal repercussions for any lapses in enforcement.

The Ministry has also urged provincial authorities to enhance monitoring and control of official border crossings, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing both passengers and cargo. These efforts are aimed at combating cross-border crimes, particularly the pressing threat of transnational drug trafficking, which endangers national and social security.

This announcement comes in response to the Ministry’s recent observations of illegal border activities, including unauthorized crossings, the establishment of makeshift checkpoints, and a surge in illegal immigration. The Ministry is particularly focused on curtailing transnational crime and drug-related offenses, which have been on the rise and pose significant challenges to public safety.

As the government strengthens its border security measures, officials are calling for the cooperation of local communities and citizens in reporting any suspicious activities to help maintain the integrity of Cambodia’s borders.
