Government Cancels Cement Projects to Protect Ecotourism in Kampot Province

In a significant move to preserve the region’s ecotourism and cultural heritage, the Cambodian government has canceled over 460 hectares of cement projects in Kampong Trach district, Kampot province. This decision affects a limestone mountain cement project previously licensed to BYRICH Construction Material Company Limited.

The cancellation is outlined in letter No. 1878 from the Office of the Council of Ministers, dated 21 November 2024. The letter emphasizes the importance of maintaining the area’s distinctive religious, ecotourism, and cultural attributes, specifically in the Damnak Kantuot Khang commune and the neighboring North Damnak Kantuot commune.

The cement production project was spread across an area of 463.60 hectares, which included six mountainous locations rich in limestone—with a license valid from 5 March 2020 to 5 March 2035. The specific mountains affected by the license were Phnom Damrey, Phnom Phaov, Phnom Toch North in Prey Kes village, Phnom Sar in Damnak Kantuot village, Kampong Trach Mountain in Damnak Kantuot village, and Phnom Touch South in Phnom Damrey village.

Furthermore, to officially recognize the area’s significance for religious, ecotourism, and cultural purposes, a ceremony will be held on 9 January 2025, organized by the Ministry of Mines and Energy alongside the Kampot Provincial Administration. This event marks a renewed commitment to preserving the natural and cultural landscape of Kampong Trach district for future generations.
