The discussion took place during a meeting on August 21, 2025, between HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and HE Shaharuddin Onn, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to Cambodia. Both leaders emphasized the importance of fostering bilateral relations and shared their experiences to encourage further investment, particularly from Malaysia into Cambodia’s halal food sector.

Importantly, Malaysia has a long-standing relationship with Cambodia, being one of the first nations to invest in the country since April 1994. Notable Malaysian projects include the establishment of Angkor Beer and a power plant, showcasing the depth of this partnership.

The prospects for growth are promising, as bilateral trade between Cambodia and Malaysia is projected to reach approximately US$859 million by 2024.
