Progress Update on the Stung Khliech Water Resources Development Project in Kampong Speu

Strategic irrigation infrastructure reaches fifteen percent completion milestone to support forty thousand hectares of farmland

The Stung Khliech Water Resources Development Project in Kampong Speu province has reached a fifteen percent completion rate in its construction phase. Once finished, this significant infrastructure project will have the capacity to provide irrigation for approximately 40,000 hectares of both dry and rainy season rice crops. This progress update was shared during an on-site inspection led by His Excellency Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, on February 24, 2026.

Located in Trapeang Thmier village of Tasal commune and Samaki village of Reaksmei Samaki commune within the Aoral district, the project is situated about 82 kilometers from Chbar Mon town in Kampong Speu.

The primary infrastructure components of the project consist of a main dam, a spillway, a water gate, and a dam management building. Additionally, the work includes a 13-kilometer access road and various drainage culverts along the route. The entire construction timeline is set for 36 months, having commenced in December 2025 with an expected completion date in December 2028.

The Stung Khleach Water Resources Development Project plays a crucial role in supplying irrigation water for 35,000 hectares of wet rice and 5,000 hectares of dry rice. It also provides daily water for the population and industrial use across the provinces of Kampong Speu, Kandal, Takeo, and Phnom Penh. Additionally, the project has the potential to create a natural tourism area, enhance biodiversity, serve as a water source for wildlife, and increase fish production in the region.

Furthermore, it is important to note that the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology recently inspected the progress of the Relaing Chrey Sla Kou Main Canal, which is part of the Phnom Penh Water Release and Diversion Project located in Kampong Speu province. (read more)
