Extensive road expansion and drainage system upgrades in Wat Kor Sangkat signal the start of a city-wide modernization initiative

The Battambang Provincial Administration has officially broken ground on a comprehensive infrastructure project in Battambang City, focusing on road restoration and the construction of advanced drainage systems. The ceremony, held on March 9, 2026, was led by His Excellency Sok Lou, Governor of Battambang Province, marking a key milestone in the local government’s efforts to improve urban living standards and flood management.

The current project centers on a vital section of Street 154 located in Wat Kor Sangkat. Technical details provided during the launch indicate that the road will be widened and reinforced with concrete over a length of 775 meters and a width of 12 meters. To address long-term drainage needs, the administration is installing a rainwater drainage network extending 1,756 meters with a 1-meter diameter on both sides of the thoroughfare. This system will be supported by 62 manholes and the construction of 1,820 meters of concrete curbs to define the roadway and pedestrian spaces.

Governor Sok Lou highlighted that this development is not an isolated effort but part of a broader, phased master plan to repair and upgrade all major roads within Battambang City. He emphasized that these improvements are essential for easing traffic congestion and facilitating safer travel for the public. The governor also took the opportunity to call for greater civic responsibility, urging residents to respect traffic regulations and maintain the cleanliness of their surroundings.

Furthermore, the provincial leadership has directed municipal and local authorities to expedite the reclamation of public sidewalks by removing illegal structures and temporary extensions that hinder public access. Governor Sok Lou encouraged citizens to cooperate with these measures and refrain from further encroachments, ensuring that state-owned land remains accessible for public use and infrastructure maintenance. These collective efforts are expected to significantly enhance the city’s resilience and aesthetic appeal as it continues to grow as a regional economic hub. However, the project cost, funding source, constructor, and procurement procedure were not disclosed in detail. Recently, to boost the momentum of development in Battambang province, His Excellency the Governor of Battambang province also requested the Chinese Ambassador to help mobilize Chinese investors to invest in agricultural processing and to establish a Chinese special economic zone in Battambang province.
