Cambodia and France Advance Ambitious Modernization and Expansion Plans for the National Museum of Cambodia

A newly finalized 900,000-euro feasibility study provides a strategic blueprint to transform Phnom Penh’s premier cultural landmark into a world-class institution meeting modern professional standards.

Cambodia and France have reached a key milestone in their enduring cultural partnership with the official handover of a comprehensive feasibility study aimed at modernizing and expanding the National Museum of Cambodia. Valued at approximately 900,000 euros, the study marks a crucial step toward upgrading the historic institution’s infrastructure, visitor facilities, and conservation capabilities.

The formal handover ceremony took place on October 22, 2026, drawing prominent figures including Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, Vongsey Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of the Council of Ministers, and Olivier Richard, French Ambassador to Cambodia.

Speaking at the event, Minister Phoeurng Sackona noted that the project stands as a clear testament to the profound depth of friendship and cultural cooperation between Cambodia and France. She emphasized that this partnership is rooted in a long-standing shared history and a joint commitment to safeguarding, preserving, and promoting priceless cultural heritage.

Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth highlighted that the completion of the feasibility study establishes a valuable foundational framework for the upcoming phases of museum development. He articulated the Royal Government’s visionary ambition to evolve the National Museum into a modern, highly secure, and sustainable institution capable of operating under contemporary professional standards while welcoming a growing influx of domestic and international visitors.

The initiative traces its origins to the strategic vision and guidance put forward by former Prime Minister Hun Sen toward the close of the sixth legislative mandate, building upon high-level summits between the leaders of Cambodia and France. This collaborative vision materialized through a direct partnership between the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the French Embassy in Phnom Penh, culminating in the €900,000 feasibility assessment.
