Cambodia Seeks Japanese Assistance for Major Upgrade of NR No. 1 to Ease Traffic Flow

Cambodia has officially requested support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to upgrade NR No. 1, a key route stretching from Phnom Penh to Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, in a bid to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the transportation of goods. This proposal was discussed during a meeting between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and JICA on 26 August 2024, as part of ongoing projects in the Southern Economic Corridor of Cambodia.

The MoPWT is advocating for JICA’s assistance in rehabilitating NR No. 1 and constructing additional bridges across the Mekong River, which are crucial for improving traffic flow and facilitating the efficient movement of people and goods through Phnom Penh.

Acknowledging the critical importance of this infrastructure project, JICA has agreed to consider the proposal and will forward it to its management for further deliberation.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that the construction of Phase 4 of NR No. 1, which spans a total of 4 kilometres from the base of the Monivong Bridge (Chbar Ampov) on the east side, was inaugurated on 13 March 2018 under the leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the former Prime Minister of Cambodia.

This phase of the project had a total investment of over USD 23 million, with approximately USD 16 million provided as a grant from the Government of Japan and a contribution of USD 7.87 million from the Royal Government of Cambodia, aimed at addressing policy requirements and related implications.
