The Gov’t Greenlights New Legislation to Propel Waterway Investments

The Office of the Council of Ministers has given its approval to a draft law on waterway transport comprising of 18 chapters and 275 articles, marking a significant stride towards enhancing waterway investment and port management in Cambodia. This development was announced in a press release dated February 2, 2024.

The primary objective of this draft law is to effectively oversee and advance waterway transport and ports, ensuring the maintenance of order, safety, and security along the waterways.

Furthermore, the proposed legislation seeks to encourage the development of infrastructure and environmental preservation, with a focus on fostering investment, bolstering competitiveness in national and international trade, and lending support to overall national economic growth.

The provisions of this draft law are intended to be applicable to ships, port crews, ship owners or operators, shipyard facilities, waterway infrastructure, and other pertinent activities within Cambodian territory. However, it excludes ships, ports, and port facilities under the jurisdiction of the competent forces of the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Interior, as specified in a separate legal document.
